What Happens During a DNA Collection Appointment?

For many people, scheduling a genetic testing appointment can cause feelings of anxiety or uncertainty. Understanding what to expect during a collection appointment can help you feel more comfortable, whether you are visiting a dedicated site or arranging a mobile collection at your home or office.

Step-by-Step Collection Process

A professional DNA collection appointment is designed to be streamlined, efficient, and completely pain-free, typically taking only 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Step 1: Identity Auditing (Legal Track Only)

If your test is for legal, court-admissible purposes, the collector starts by verifying your identity. Every adult participant must present a valid government-issued photo ID. The collector copies these credentials onto the official chain-of-custody tracking form and takes a real-time photograph of each participant for identity validation.

Step 2: Biological Sample Collection

The actual collection process is non-invasive and does not require a blood draw or needles. The collector uses sterile, cotton-tipped buccal swabs, rubbing them firmly against the inside of each cheek for 30 seconds. This action harvests epithelial cells from the lining of the mouth, which contain the necessary genetic material for analysis.

Step 3: Package Sealing and Transit Log

The collector places the completed buccal swabs directly into specialized specimen envelopes. If the collection is for a legal test, these envelopes are secured with serialized, tamper-evident tape in your presence.

Both the collector and the participants sign the tracking logs to confirm that the samples were securely sealed at the point of collection.

Step 4: Laboratory Dispatch and Analysis

The sealed sample envelopes are dispatched directly to an AABB-accredited laboratory using secure tracking. Once received, laboratory staff verify that the tamper-evident seals are completely intact before initiating analysis.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Because the collection utilizes buccal cheek swabs rather than a blood draw, there is no need to fast or alter your daily routines before your appointment.

To help ensure a clean collection and avoid sample failures, please abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This simple step helps prevent food particles or liquid residue from interfering with the genetic material on the swabs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive the official test results?

Once the samples arrive at the AABB-accredited laboratory, standard analysis is typically completed within 2 to 3 business days. The final, audited report is securely sent to you via encrypted email, or mailed directly to your designated legal counsel or court representative.

Can the mother and alleged father schedule separate collection appointments?

Yes. In both legal and informational testing, participants do not need to attend the same appointment or be in the same room. A mobile collector can meet with the mother and child at one time and location, and arrange a separate appointment for the alleged father at a different time or place. The laboratory matches the samples using distinct tracking numbers assigned to the case.
